How much yarn in a Lilou designer silk scarf

Lilou ran a little competition at a recent Craft show, asking people to guess how many metres of silk yarn in a standard Lilou designer silk scarf.

There was a clue or two to help point everyone in the right direction. The scarf is 100% silk; about 2 metres long; and there are approximately 30,000m of silk yarn in 1 kilogram.

It was interesting how differently people approached the calculation from hell. Some tried to gauge the weight of the scarf. Others tried to count the ends, measure the width and work out the yarn in the warp.

When asking for more clues, Ingrid explained that there was as much yarn in the warp (length) as in the weft (the width). That provoked a few head scratches.

Calculations resulted in guesses ranging from 2000m to 90,000m!

To be honest, unless you are a weaver, or even THE weaver of the scarf, it would be an inspired guess indeed to hit the sweet spot metreage.

What is your best guess of the yarn in the above 100% mulberry silk scarf? The winner at the show was a few hundred metres out. There are £15 worth of vouchers waiting here for the closest online guess before Jan 31st 2012!

Let the head-scratching begin!

Leave your answer in a comment. All the best for the festive season and here's to a creative and colourful 2012.
